Dr. Martin Scanlon

Speaker biography:

Dr. Martin Scanlon is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba. Martin's teaching and research interests have been focused on food processing and food quality, primarily working with Canadian prairie crops. Martin has published over 160 peer-reviewed works to-date plus over 150 non-peer reviewed contributions. As well as being on panels for granting agencies and international review teams, Martin has worked with a number of trans-national and local companies to implement new technologies aimed at improving process efficiency or product quality. Martin grew up in a pub in northern England. He holds BSc(Hons) and PhD degrees from the University of Leeds (England).

Dr. Kevin Falk

Research Scientist

Corteva Agriscience

Speaker biography:

Dr. Kevin Falk is a Research Scientist at Corteva Agriscience, where he leads the development and implementation of cutting-edge digital and automation technologies to enhance agricultural research. His work focuses on building innovative tools for Corteva’s scientists, including the development software including AI-driven models for phenotyping, as well as unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for imaging and spray applications.

Kevin earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding from Iowa State University, where his research focused on developing innovative tools to characterize root system architecture in soybean. His work integrated genomic analysis, computer vision, machine learning, and high-throughput phenotyping to advance the understanding of root traits, with direct applications in breeding more resilient and high-yielding crops.

At Corteva, his passion lies in developing practical solutions that empower scientists and bridge the gap between technology and agricultural discovery. At the 40th Plant Science Graduate Student Symposium Kevin will share insights into emerging technologies in plant science research and their transformative potential for the future of agriculture.

Dr. Douglas J. Cattani

Speaker biography:

Dr. D.J. Cattani works with herbaceous perennial species for food, feed and bioenergy. His program provides expertise in the areas of breeding and agronomic production aspects for food and feed and agronomy for bioenergy production. Dr. Cattani has over 40-years’ experience in herbaceous perennial seed production. He has worked in academia, government and private industry.
